Mute Audio Documents 1978-1984

20071102123456-0-audiobox1-300.jpg

En 1980 yo tenía 14 años. Por aquella época todos éramos eléctricos...

128 tracks over 10 CDs, Mute Audio Documents is a unique insight into the musical development of the label and its artists, highlighting the influence, the success and, most importantly, the great music produced since its inception in 1978. Mute Audio Documents is a collection of Mute's single releases from 1978 to 1984 and includes the first 4 double CD volumes of an ongoing series plus a 2CD rarities album exclusive to the box set. The series will feature all the A-side and B-side single tracks released by Mute in addition to album tracks by the artists for whom there were only album releases.Mute emerged in the post-punk era. It was a new era of pop democracy, and anyone could make a record. You didn't even need to know three chords, according to Mute founder Daniel Miller. All you needed, he said, was an idea. His 'idea' was to create a classic of DIY pop - a double A sided 7" single featuring the songs T.V.O.D. and Warm Leatherette. He called himself The Normal, designed a sleeve with Letraset, stuck the name Mute on it, and accidentally started a record label. You only have to listen to the music gathered on these 10 CDs to see how Mute became the blueprint for maverick independence and sonic adventurousness - a blueprint that countless labels follow to this day.The documentary evidence is here. All you have to do is listen.

Volume 1 1978 - 1981 Featuring: The Normal, Fad Gadget, Silicon Teens, D.A.F., Non, Robert Rental, Depeche Mode, Boyd Rice and Smegma.Volume 2 1982 Featuring: Non, Depeche Mode, Fad Gadget, Die Doraus Und Die Marinas, Yazoo and Liaisons Dangereuses.Volume 3 1983
Featuring: Depeche Mode, Duet Emmo, Robert Görl, Yazoo, Fad Gadget, The Assembly and The Birthday Party.
Volume 4 1984 Featuring: Einstürzende Neubauten, Fad Gadget, Robert Görl, Depeche Mode, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, I Start Counting, Bruce Gilbert, Boyd Rice and Frank Tovey.

Daniel Miller has, for nigh on 30 years, been at the helm of a unique and groundbreaking label, which has gained a reputation as one of the most consistently successful, adventurous and challenging labels in the world. With offices in London, Berlin and New York and a roster that includes renowned international artists such as Depeche Mode, Moby, Erasure, Goldfrapp, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and Richard Hawley, Mute Audio Documents unashamedly celebrates the label with a remarkable box set detailing both the known as well as the not-so-well-known tracks (some of which are available here for the first time on CD) and the promise of more volumes in the near future. Mute Audio Documents includes exclusive sleeve notes by Chris Bohn, Stephen Dalton, Ian Johnston and Dave Henderson, original artwork and exclusive original poster for The Normal.

TEARDROP EXPLODES Peel Sessions Plus

20071102183527-product-1125344.jpg

Ah y "The poppies (amapolas) are in the field But dont ask me what that means..."

TEARDROP EXPLODES Peel Sessions Plus (2007 UK CD album comprising 16 tracks recorded live for their John Peel Sessions from 1979-82; spanning the full career, the collection include both unreleased songs [a cover of Wah! Heat's 'Better Scream / Make That Happen'] and radically different versions of songs that appeared on their singles and albums; to hear 'Pure Joy' as it was meant to sound is, indeed, a pure joy, as is the harrowing 'You Disappear From View', here in it's true form, complete with sleevenotes by Julian Cope).

The Red Button: the finest pure power pop album since the heady days of the late 90s?

20071102200258-album-she-s-about-to.jpg

"If The Red Button had been around in the '60s when I was producing, I would have signed them to EMI." -- Norman "Hurricane" Smith, Beatles engineer (1962-1966) and record producer (Pink Floyd, Zombies) for EMI.

The Red Button is made up of Los Angeles-based singer-songwriters Seth Swirsky and Mike Ruekberg.

Seth has written hit songs for dozens of artists over the years ranging from Rufus Wainwright ("Instant Pleasure") to Al Green (“Love Is A Beautiful Thing”), Jane Weidlin (of The Go-Gos), Tina Turner, Taylor Dayne ("Tell it to My Heart") and many others. His solo album, Instant Pleasure, was named Best Pop Album at the 2005 L.A. Music Awards. He's also created three popular books consisting of handwritten letters from baseball players.

Mike was the writer and singer for the Minneapolis-based pop-rockers Rex Daisy, who recorded a much-admired CD for Geffen Records with producer Paul Fox (XTC). A highly, sought-after L.A. session singer and musician, Mike also wrote the soundtrack to the Indie cult film Dummy (starring Adrien Brody) which plays on cable TV frequently.

When they met in 2005, Seth and Mike discovered a shared love of melodic pop songs. So, they started writing together and 11 songs later, She’s About To Cross My Mind was born.

LA HISTORIA DE “CRUEL GIRL”

Cruel Girl

Mike: "The second song we wrote/recorded. I have to say, it didn't relate to anything current in my life at that moment. For me it was more about all the pain inflicted by women in the past! But honestly, it was about that 12-string Rick as much as anything. Such a cruel, cruel girl she is. It once took me five hours to re-string her, but it was worth every second. She arouses such passion in my heart!"

Seth: "I was sitting on Mike’s couch with an acoustic guitar. We were working on another song. The hook popped out and again Mike said “hold everything!”. He put on his tape recorder knowing this was going to be a good song for us. I remember him loving it immediately. He then wrote the verse and we both wrote the bridge. It was like the way John and Paul used to write –two guys in a room, excited about writing songs."’

The Brit Box: U.K. Indie, Shoegaze, and Brit-Pop Gems of the Last Millennium

20071106122920-22610615.jpg

THE BRITS ARE ALRIGHT!

The First Comprehensive Survey Of U.K. Indie Music, Rhino's 4-CD The Brit Box, Hits U.S. Shores November 20

 June 15 2007
LOS ANGELES --
Though the British Invasion of the 1960s has been well documented, the wave of U.K. bands that followed in the wake of '80s post-punk hasn't -- until now. Rhino's 4-CD set THE BRIT BOX: U.K. INDIE, SHOEGAZE, AND BRIT-POP GEMS OF THE LAST MILLENNIUM is the first collection anywhere to chart the rise of cool Britannia. Due November 20, THE BRIT BOX gathers key recordings from 78 U.K. performers spanning the last 15 years of the 20th century. While many of these artists enjoyed superstar status in England, with just a handful of exceptions few dented the American charts -- for the most part, only the pasty-looking outsiders and college kids willing to dig through their local import bins got to hear this stuff on release. Independent record companies have always been the lifeblood of alternative rock, but what makes a disc "indie" goes far beyond the label it's on. Unlike punk groups, indie bands don't reject mainstream music so much as co-opt it for their own ends. On the first CD of THE BRIT BOX, seminal artists like The Smiths, Jesus & Mary Chain, and The Stone Roses take good old fashioned guitar-pop and turn it into something fresh, while groups like Happy Mondays and Primal Scream borrow gleefully from hip-hop to give birth to acid house. By 1990, the British press was up in arms over acts that spent more time looking at their feet than their audiences and, for better or worse, disparate bands like Ride, My Bloody Valentine, Lush, and The Telescopes were lumped together as "shoegazers." Disc Two of THE BRIT BOX looks beyond the performance style to show that their records did have sonic similarities, emphasizing introspective soundscapes, hazy guitars, and dense production -- a style currently enjoying a (typically understated) revival. Disc Three of THE BRIT BOX opens with Suede's "Metal Mickey," a shot across the cultural bow heralding the arrival of Brit-pop. Another term bandied about frequently (and often derisively) by the U.K. rock press of the mid-'90s, "Brit-pop" reflected a newfound confidence in the English music scene, and bands like Oasis, Blur, Pulp, and Elastica reveled in the highlife as hit singles seemed to pour forth effortlessly (a tuneful bacchanal immortalized in the 2003 documentary Live Forever). The final CD of THE BRIT BOX shows that even latecomers to the party like Ash, Super Furry Animals, Mansun, The Verve, and Placebo had some smashing songs in them. There are enough art school refugees peopling these bands that Rhino's design team felt compelled to go bonkers. THE BRIT BOX is housed in a 6"x12" box depicting a traditional English phone booth illuminated with a battery-powered flickering light bulb! The photo-filled 80-page accompanying book includes a foreword from Creation Records founder Alan McGee, an essay by Select A labor of love years in the making, THE BRIT BOX follows such previous collections as Nuggets: Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era and Left Of The Dial: Dispatches From The '80s Underground in the proud Rhino tradition of dicing up pop music's past four CDs at a time. But more than mere history lessons, these anthems for Anglophiles remain incredibly catchy today (and offer proof that the recent American success of groups like Coldplay, Keane, and Snow Patrol didn't occur in a vacuum). Diana Dors: La respuesta inglesa a Marilyn Monroe

This is the long-awaited release of the CD of the fabulous 'Swingin' Dors' album. This was Britain's most glamorous star of the fifties. Diana Dors had all the Hollywood style and glamour, but remained truly British. She was one of only a handful of glamour stars from that period that did not sell herself for leading roles in big pictures - hence she lost out on many major films, but those she did make were extremely memorable. She was a great star and had all the glamour right to the end - indeed the whole TV screen would 'light up' whenever she appeared - here she left us a tremendous legacy - apart from her films, in this original recording from her big year 1960! There are twelve great songs and she had a great voice to match on this. One song is from a movie she starred in (but did not sing the song in the film) 'An Alligator Named Daisy', called: 'I'm In Love For The Very First Time'. Some catchy numbers on this. Diana Dors did not release enough material at the time, but today she would have had more scope and opportunity to utilise her multi-talents. She was from a time when multi-talented stars were pretty thin on the ground. It's incredible that it has taken SO long for this album to be issued on CD - more than 23 years after her untimely death. Indeed, her album wasn't even re-released on vinyl until two years after she had died, and puzzling still, that there was no issue of a CD at that time either. In total since, there have been six releases of her same work in various formats; original 1960 black vinyl, a 1960 collector's 'special' pressed on red vinyl, the re-issue in black vinyl in 1986, a cassette tape, and also a 'picture disc' of the album appeared in small numbers, and now of course finally at long last the CD we've all been waiting for - I have them all - they're worth collecting!  The songs here are memorable and very well sang with a great 'swingin' big brass band! Like she never made a bad film; Diana did not record a bad song. No genuine fan should be without this album - it's tremendous, fabulous, and simply fantastic! Once played, you will want to hear it again

. Y esto dice Rev-Ola: Shaun Harris was bassist, singer and founding member of the groundbreaking hydra-headed beast that was The West Coast Pop-Art Experimental Band. While the WCPAEB have rightly become the stuff of legend, little attention has been paid to Shaun’s subsequent recordings in the early ‘70s. Until now. Together with former WCPAEB band mate and general all-round musical genius Michael Lloyd, Shaun cut an album’s worth of his own compositions for Capitol Records in 1973 featuring star turns from the likes of Beach Boy Bruce Johnston and the ubiquitous Jim Gordon and Larry Knetchel. The album also features Shaun’s brother and WCPAEB lynchpin Danny and was orchestrated by their father, the world-renowned composer Roy Harris.Shaun’s memorable, hook-laden songs (akin to the softer side of the WCPAEB oeuvre i.e. “Queen Nymphet”, Eighteen Is Over The Hill” and “Free As A Bird”) are set beautifully against a backdrop of Burritos-flavoured country rock and layers of warm Beach Boys vocal harmonies. Contains the classic single ‘I’ll Cry Out”, a high watermark in Harris’ esteemed back catalogue.

Super Furry Animals "Hey Venus" - a sort of cosmic Bacharach trip

20071114140724-rtradcd346.jpg

After a short run of albums that found Super Furry Animals exploring their slower, more ponderous side, Hey Venus! sees Wales’ heady psychedelic explorers revisit the bright melodies and glammy bounce that powered earlier albums like 1999’s Guerilla and their fondly remembered debut, Fuzzy Logic. While a vague sort of concept album, following the narrative of a character, Venus, as she moves from a small town to a great metropolis, Super Furries know enough about songcraft not to let the backstory overshadow the melodies. "Run-Away" comes on like Queen and the Beach Boys jamming on a Christmas Top of the Pops, "Neo Consumer" is a pile-up of infectious vocal melodies, singalong choruses and electronic blips that stubbornly refuses to outstay its welcome, and as is customary these days, Bunf gets a chance on the microphone for the profoundly odd "Battersey Odyssey". And to play counter to all this cheer and exuberance, there’s a pair of late-doors slowies, "Suckors" and "Let the Wolves Howl at the Moon", that usher the album to a serene close. Eight albums in, and we’re still waiting for Super Furry Animals to deliver a dud album; at this rate, it’s never going to happen. --Louis Pattison (amazon.co.uk)

Curioso y divertido single

(We can be free / Live in a lilac time / Stand in the rain / Hold hands and the sun will shine”)  2007 release of the first output from the band in over five years. The Lilac Time was formed by the man known as 'Tin Tin' in the 80's, Stephen Duffy ('Kiss Me') with his brother Nick and their ranks have increased to six members with this album. It's Stephen Duffy's first set of recordings since taking over as prime songwriting collaborator with British superstar Robbie Williams and another previous pairing with Duran Duran keyboardist Nick Rhodes as The Devils. The band of course still includes brother Nick as well as singer and multi-instrumentalist Claire Worrall along with folk-jazz luminary and former member of Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated and co-founder of Pentangle, Danny ThompsonStephen, of course, has never been shy of revealing his sources. True to form, he reveals that new single Driving Somewhere was an attempt to evoke “Townes Van Zandt in Two Lane Blacktop and Fleetwood Mac’s cover of The Beach Boys’ Farmers Daughter.” Desert Shore emerged at the 29 Palms Inn after a day spent driving through the Mojave Desert listening to Nico’s Desertshore. Even The Lilac Time’s name is an acknowledgement of past inspirations. It stems, of course, from a Nick Drake song in a decade even less hospitable to Drake’s oeuvre than the one that killed him off.

Cat Power y su versión pop del Stuck Inside Of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again de Dylan

20071116152233-catpower-5b1-5d-775314.jpgLo que más me gusta de Dylan es cuando hacen versiones pop de sus canciones. Y al margen de los reyes en este tema –obviamente The Byrds- hoy me he encontrado en la BSO de “I´m No There” (biopic de Todd Haynes) una bonita versión poppy del Stuck Inside Of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again de Cat Power

A Gerry Goffin And Carole King Song Collection 1961-1967

20071117090816-product-617627.jpgThe full scope of the mighty songwriting talents of Carole King and Gerry Goffin -- a much-chronicled 60s team who had plenty of troubles of their own, but who brought some really amazing music to the world at the time! The package features songs in a variety of genres -- soul, pop, rock, country, and more -- including some appearing here on CD for the first time ever, and plenty more that aren't just the obvious Goffin/King hits! The CD features a huge booklet -- nearly 25 pages in all -- with track-by-track notes on the tunes, as well as on the songwriting team -- and as with some of Ace's other explorations into 60s pop powerhouses, the single disc package is almost more informative and thorough than some bigger box sets. Titles include "He's In Town" by The Tokens, "Don't Ever Change" by The Crickets, "The First & The Last" by The Chiffons, "Brand New Man" by Richard Popcorn Wylie, "Let Me Get Close To You" by Skeeter Davis, "The Idol" by Bobby Vee, "I Can't Make It Alone" by PJ Proby, "Just A Little Girl" by Donna Loren, "I Can't Hear You" by Betty Everett, "I Just Can't Say Goodbye" by Bobby Rydell, "I Didn't Have Any Summer Romance" by The Satisfactions, "Yours Until Tomorrow" by Dee Dee Warwick, "So Much Love" by Ben E King, and "A Natural Woman" by Aretha Franklin.

¿volverá Costello a grabar alguna vez algún lp?

20071118105719-elvis-20costello.jpg
"I'm not of a mind to record anymore...  There's no point.  In terms of recorded music,
the pact's been broken - the personal connection between the artist and the listener.
MP3 has dismantled the intended shape of an album.  And then everything is leaked,
everything is stolen.  So I play live, it happens in the moment.  If I do a new song,
I might never play it again, and if you're not there  you fuckin' miss it..."

- Elvis Costello, MOJO magazine (November 2007 issue)

"I don't have much interest or burning need, if you will, to record...
If I had to choose between recording and concerts, I'll take the live adventure."

"I'm through with making albums.  I just don't need it anymore.  What's the point of making an album
with the songs in a specific order, when anyone with an mp3 player can re-set the track order?
When I'm doing a concert, people will actually have to listen to the songs in whichever order
I put them.  In the future, I"ll probably just stick to performing my songs in live shows."

Nouvelle Vague & Julie Delpy - "Lalala"

20071123112558-2-days-in-paris.jpgFrom the Two Days In Paris OST, this one is a cool saucy delight. Better than any track on Nouvelle Vague's last albums... Agreed! Nouvelle Vague & Julie Delpy make a dreamy combination....I loved this, when I heard in the cinema, at the end of the movie.

Burial: Weird Soul Music

20071130095250-m-8982a77866de16178b144b1fac2351bc.jpg

Este es el sonido del Londres del 2007.

The council houses in London possess an aura that is easier to feel than it is to explain. I used to jog at midnight and come upon the council houses, always devoid of life from the outside, yet teeming with rotten things behind its clean façade. Every night I would return to them, both repelled and magnetized by their unnerving paradox of innocuousness and evil, letting the ghostly atmosphere of the council houses take me over in some puzzling, profound way. Whether he knows it or not, anonymous London producer Burial makes music sound like council houses feel. His eponymous debut in 2006 capitalized on the eerie sensation of London at night by taking the rhythmic patterns and instrumentation of dubstep, a chiefly British genre, and blackening the palette. The drums sounded like knives hitting steel; the record crackles evoked raindrops; the bass was so low that it seemed to operate at subsonic frequencies. Every so often, a voice would make its strangled way up the surface, crying for everyone in London who wanted out before trailing off into the unforgiving cityscape. For those wondered what Massive Attack would sound like in 2020? This is it. Nothing sounds this next-level, dark and beautiful.

Robyn Hitchcock - I Wanna Go Backwards box set

20071130103820-view-image.jpgRobyn Hitchcock has finally begun the daunting task of compiling his groundbreaking post-Soft Boys solo catalog with the I Wanna Go Backwards box set. The first of two upcoming collections, I Wanna Go Backwards includes three of his most classic albums. Hitchcock's first solo album Black Snake Diamond Role (remastered for this collection) is a private rock album featuring ex-Soft Boys, a Vibrator, a Fur and other friends. I Often Dream of Trains finds Robyn at his all-acoustic zenith with a seminal collection of kaleidoscopic, stripped down folk. Eye continues in the tradition of Trains draping Hitchcock's signature layered lyrical imagery over his most musically direct work to date. All the albums feature bonus tracks and enhanced liner notes: reminiscences (BSDR & WTMB), an excerpt from a novel in progress (Trains), and original poetry (Eye), plus previously unseen photos and Hitchcock cartoons. Additional bonus material includes While Thatcher Mauled Britain Part 1 & 2, a two-disc comprehensive look at a labyrinth of Robyn's largely unreleased solo b-sides, outtakes and home recordings. Black Snake Diamond Role and I Often Dream of Trains have been remastered for this collection.

In addition to the exclusive box set packaging, all three albums will also be simultaneously re-released individually, allowing fans to fill the gaps in their Hitchcock compendiums. Individual album versions will also feature the bonus tracks included on the box set versions as well as the enhanced liner notes. In addition to compact disc format the set will also be released in an eight-record vinyl box set version complete with original LP artwork. The combined release of the I Wanna Go Backwards box set and the individual albums that comprise it are the definitive document of a career defining period of creation for one of the worlds most eccentric and beloved singer/songwriters, a must-have for collectors and fanatics alike.

This is a limited edition LP, there will only be one pressing of I Wanna Go Backwards on vinyl. Be sure to reserve yours now! All pre-orders of this album come with a free digital version, available in your Stash on release date.
