EAST RIVER PIPE returns with another brilliant jewel of homemade chamber pop!
This sixth release (and first new East River Pipe record since 2003's Garbageheads On Endless Stun) is another magical, intimate album, one that continues to justify Rolling Stone's claim that F.M. Cornog is "one of our generation's great eccentric songwriters." Fans of SMOG, Mercury Rev, and My Morning Jacket should take notice of Cornog's mastery.
East River Pipe (a.k.a F.M. Cornog) has long documented the shadowy world of the downtrodden and forgotten amongst us, the people you pass on the street but choose not to notice. Their struggles and their triumphs have always been his inspiration, and his music both celebrates and mourns the down-and-out loser in all of us. It's real life and it's not always pretty, but in the hands of East River Pipe these stories are always moving.
What Are You On? gravitates towards the role that drugs play in the lives of a variety of characters and situations. It's a real life look at drugs/alcohol and how they infiltrate our lives in real ways - both positive and negative.
There's humor and there's epic sadness. Triumph and tragedy. Definitely not your typical hedonistic romp through the rock n roll lifestyle, or the glamourous life of cocaine snorting super models, but instead a collection honest, stark and beautiful portraits of people struggling just to get by, or just to get high, as best they can.
