Nuevo single de Belle & Sebastian

20060302103927-1106232605stuheader.jpgla portada se puede ver aquí:  http://www.belleandsebastian.com/recordings.php?release=39
we can confirm that the 2nd single from "The Life Pursuit" will be "The Blues Are Still Blue". It’s going to be released in the UK on April 3rd. Once again we’re utilising the old 3-format thing. The CD comes backed by "The Life Pursuit" and "Mr Richard", which have both been getting aired at the live shows. The 7" has B&S’ version of "Whiskey In The Jar", and the DVD has the video of "The Blues..." (shot recently in LA) and "Roy Walker (Live At The Botanics)". Quite a lot of you are in that I would imagine, as it’s far more crowd-focused than the "Lazy Line.." one off "Funny Little Frog"

Recopilación de Saturday Looks Good To Me

20060302104809-saturday-look-good-to-me.jpgBetween the release of their three full-length records, Saturday Looks Good To Me has created a total of 12 EPs, 7-inches, singles, and tour CDs, all limited, sold-out and highly sought after by fans. Sound on Sound collects these impossible-to-find tracks, presenting 30 songs recorded from the band's inception in 2000 through its most recent sessions in 2005. The record moves in chronological fashion through five vocalists, including the band's earliest singers who had not yet been featured on full-length releases, and about 20 other musicians, in different combinations on most songs. In the disc's nearly 80-minute running time, evolution is evident, but each song delivers a very different take on rock pop perfection and Saturday Looks Good To Me's broad acceptance of pop music history, as Sound On Sound stuffs the best of the band's unavailable music into one amazing and somehow cohesive document.

Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley) with the Watson Twins - "You are what you love" (incluida en "Rabbit Fur Coat")

"You are what you love”, el mejor corte del album, parece rescatado de cualquier vinilo de girl group de los 50 ó 60 (Ángel Ortiz en muzikalia.com)

You Are What You Love,”: “Every morning upon waking / To you I’m a symbol or a monument / Your rite of passage to fulfillment / But I’m not yours for the taking”.

De la hoja promocional: Patsy, Petula, and Chrissie have an heiress apparent,” claimed Entertainment Weekly, while Elvis Costello was spurred to include the band on his Artist Choice compilation, going on to comment that Jenny’s “storytelling is remarkable

The Revelations

20060302192425-ytlsingle.jpg

Annika Magnberg, Sarah Vitorino and Louise Masters answered an ad in the NME looking for the 21st-century Ronettes. Namecheck Spector’s babes and the Supremes, add swirling organ and a touch of northern soul, and you’re in the land of pure, timeless girl pop. Hence the Revelations, who have had one single, You’re the Loser, on the indie label Fierce Panda

A new Swedish/Portuguese/English girl trio whose summery harmonies nod to The Ronnettes, The Supremes and Phil Spector’s classic Sixties wall of sound. Remember the name. (The Sun)

Soul Jazz Records Presents Tropicalia: a Brazilian Revolution in Sound

20060302205318-m-tropicalia-cd-color.jpg

Además del disco, esto:  http://www.barbican.org.uk/tropicalia

Tropicalia is one of the most significant cultural movements in Brazil encompassing music, film, visual art and theatre.
‘Tropicália’ is the first album to bring together all the key artists involved in the movement – Os Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Tom Zé, Gal Costa and more.

The Tropicália movement was born in 1968, a momentous year around the world. In Brazil, army violence that killed three protesters in the opening months of 1968 failed to keep students from protesting the four-year-old repressive Brazilian military dictatorship. It was against this extraordinary backdrop that Tropicália arrived.

Mixing psychedelic rock, avant-garde musique concrete (tape loops, sound experiments), samba, funk and soul, Tropicália was so radical – and its social implications so politically profound - that its leading protagonists, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, were arrested, imprisoned and finally exiled in 1969.
Tropicália’s unique ideology mixed high art with mass culture. Tropicália created musical and cultural anarchy, a revolution in Brazilian sound with a legacy later to be international

Camera Obscura en Junio

20060308102131-270-cameraer-362g.jpg

Curioso el título del single,  "Lloyd, I’m ready to be heartbroken", sin duda un homenaje al "Are You Ready to be heartbroken" del primer LP de LLoyd Cole

I'm back with Edward Ball from The Times. We went to school together and he's been my best friend for years. Then there is Victoria [Yeulet] who works in Reckless Records on Berwick Street in London. She's worked there for years. I used to go in for ages to see this other girl who worked there that I fancied but Victoria and I became friends. I was always a bit shy with her when we first met as she can be very imposing. But she's actually very cool. I was in there one day and said we were going back to the studio for the first time in 11 years. She said she could sing a bit, so we asked her along and she's been amazing")

What was prison like?

I did not pick up a guitar for years as I spent time being homeless or in hostels. I've been in prison four times now for things like shoplifting to feed my drug habit. I got transferred from Brixton to what I called The Good Ship Lollipop [floating HMP, The Weare]. It was the best thing that could have happened. Brixton was horrendous. I was not in a cell but in a cabin and could look out of the window over Weymouth Bay. The prison warders were pretty cool and there were computers. I found fan websites. At the same time, I got a letter from my friend, Xfm DJ Iain Baker, and he said he'd heard I was dead. I wrote back to him and he announced on the Web that I was alive and well.

We had heard the ‘Dan is dead' rumour.

I didn't actually see it myself but my sister had heard it. I don't know why anyone would write things like that. I was certainly at death's door a couple of times with the drugs but that's something I'm not proud of. When I showed the websites to the education people in the prison, one of the nuns brought me a guitar. I was supposed to give it back at lock-up in the evenings but they let me keep it in the cell with me. There was a guy in the next cell – an ex-mod – who had a four-track recording studio in his. I had the guitar and so we did some jamming together. When I'd first been given the guitar, I didn't want to pick it up. I kept a journal while I was in prison but I never really wrote seriously. People are saying that I wrote the album while I was in prison but I didn't. I didn't want to get into some kind of Johnny Cash-style thing. There was nothing to write about in that prison anyway. As I said, it was quite nice. I could have written songs about being in Brixton or Pentonville, which were much, much worse. I don't want to fall into writing that much personal stuff. Although, having said that, I have written All The Young Children On Crack. I wouldn't write songs about being homeless. There are loads of people who are homeless. I had no greater insight into it than them.

Were you recognised in prison?

A couple of times in Brixton and Pentonville – and there was one guy on the boat who recognised me. He sidled up after staring for ages and said: ‘Are you who I think you are?' The websites really boosted me, though. When Iain published I was alive, I started getting 30 letters a day. The officers couldn't believe I was so well-known. Thinking about it all really upsets me – not the fact that I went to prison but the fact it was drugs that pushed me. I cannot even imagine doing that kind of thing now. It's a really horrible spiral to fall into.

Texto del blog mp3 de poptones:

Evie Sands is brilliant. There I’ve said it. She is you know - from Beck and Beth Orton covering her song ‘It’s This I Am’ to Belle and Sebastian asking her to open up for them on their UK tours to being Dusty Springfield’s favourite singer and scoring ‘John and Mary’, the cult-classic movie starring Dustin Hoffman and Mia Farrow.  Revola recently reissued her classic debut ‘Anyway That You Want Me’ and Poptones.co.uk can’t stop playing it. Why? They are all folk-rock-soul-stompers with nice orchestrated touches.

Las revelaciones de Stuart Murdoch

20060323114831-belleandsebastian.jpg

(ver el poplife de "Another Sunny Day")

El Buen gusto de Duffy

20060324101331-1103646389a.jpg

de su blog:

Enjoyed The Greatest by Cat Power & the new Belle & Sebastian album on the way over. Really loved Rabbit Fur Coat by Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins when I heard it on Saturday night.

I Love My Friends": Re - issue out now on Cooking Vinyl with all the tracks that should have been on the album as extras. The Word magazine feature by Caitlin Moran is in the issue published on the 9th of February. Fontana re issues with BBC session extras on the way. If you missed them "Duffy" has been re issued by Sony/BMG with extra tracks and stunning new artwork - "Astronauts +" was reissued by Sanctuary last year and "Music in Colors" is out too on EMI. I think you need them all - and i won’t make a new one until you do xxx

The Best of Hefner

20060325113054-lp.jpgTracklisting (with notes)
1. A Better Friend (original single version)
The first single recorded in a small 16 track studio in Greenwich. Only the second time the band played together. Released April 1997 on Boogle Wonderland.
2. Christian Girls (original single version)
The first of three versions of this song and the song which originally bought Hefner to the attention of Beggars Banquet.
3. Pull Yourself Together (didgeridoo version)
This version of Hefner's first single for Too Pure was previously only available on a free CD with the Melody Maker. A song made single of the week on Steve Lamacq's Radio 1 evening session.
4. The Sweetness Lies Within
Second single from Hefner's critically acclaimed debut album; 'Breaking God's Heart' which was placed above Robbie Williams in an NME end of year poll.
5. The Sad Witch
From Breaking God's Heart, this song remained a live favourite in the Hefner set, right up until their split.
6. Hello Kitten
Originally the b-side to Sweetness Lies Within the popularity of this song grew and grew until it was one of Hefner's most loved songs.
7. Lee Remick
Perhaps one of the most personal of Darren Hayman's songs, originally their second single this is the re-recorded version from the singles and b-sides compilation 'Boxing Hefner'.
8. The Hymn for the Cigarettes
The first single from what remains the fans favourite Hefner album The Fidelity Wars, this song reached number 3 in John Peel's Festive 50 1999
9. The Hymn for the Alcohol
This song, also from, 'Fidelity Wars' did even better getting to number 2 in the same Festive 50. This was the first recording to feature fourth Hefner member Jack Hayter.
10. I Took Her Love for Granted
The second single from 'Fidelity Wars' had a video which featured the band in nylon flesh coloured body stockings with sew on cocks.
11. Don't Flake out on Me
A personal favourite of Darren's, this song from Fidelity Wars showed a bigger poppier sound that the band were to push forward on their third album proper 'We Love the City'.
12. I Love Only You
The closing song on 'Fidelity Wars' features unlikely scratching, under guitar riffs stolen from Big Country.
13. Good Fruit
Hefner's most successful song it got to number 42 or something like that. First single from 'We Love the City'
14. The Greedy Ugly People
This second single from 'We Love the City' failed to keep the momentum going however and their brief dalliance with the big time was over.
15. Painting and Kissing
A song about how Darren met his now wife, this song features some of the synthesizers that were to take over on Hefner's final album.
16. The Greater London Radio
Written by Darren as he drove through London from Heathrow to his home at 7 in the morning. From We Love the City.
17. The Day That Thatcher Dies
An anthem for people of a certain age and a certain political persuasion. Darren's Dad's favourite song. From We Love the City.
18. Alan Bean
First single from the perplexing fourth album; 'Dead Media'. Underneath all the Joe Meek influenced chaos is one of Darren's more understated lyrics.
19. When the Angels Play Their Drum Machines
This is a different remixed version of the song that appears on Dead Media taken from Hefner's final release (in their lifetime); The Hefner Brain.
20. Home
This song, included at Darren's request is the last song from their last album, and is a bitter sweet goodbye from the band to the music industry.
All songs written by Darren Hayman (Derrière le Garage).

Ron Sexsmith

20060327114759-ron-aigt.jpgRon Sexsmith is set to release a brand new album entitled "Time Being" on May 15th. It will be the 8th full length album from the talented Canadian singer/songwriter following on the heels of 2004 years critically acclaimed "Retriever". March 20, 2006

"Time Being" sees Ron Sexsmith being reunited with legendary producer Mitchell Froom (Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello, The Corrs, Crowded House, Daniel Powter) who produced Ron's first three albums on Interscope in the nineties. The recording sessions took place late last year in Santa Monica with drummer Pete Thomas , bassist Davey Farragher and guitarist Val McCallum contributing.

Ron’s beguiling vocals and exquisite harmonies draw you in immediately to what is probably his finest album to date. The elegance and subtly understated way in which he draws you into his music is a masterclass in melody and the natural gentility and timelessness of effortless songwriting. This established and beloved songwriter is at the height of his powers.

Messthetics Greatest Hits - The Sounds of UK DIY 1977-80

20060331104056-imghe-135.gif

Bob Stanley escribe una articulillo en The Guardian sobre The Sounds of UK DIY 1977-80  (¿ha dejado The Times?

The Homosexuals ("and the Homosexuals who weren’t, but were often beaten up for their name anyway")...

Y en el grandes éxitos hay cosas como: Featuring two never-before heard tracks by the legendary Rejects (Bruno Wizard’s 1977 band before he formed the Homosexuals). With O Level (pre-Times), Reptile Ranch (pre-Weekend), Six Minute War (pre-400 Blows), Mud Hutters (pre-Spaceheads), and Danny & the Dressmakers (producer Graham Massey pre-808 State, Bjork, etc.)… Also the inimitable tunings of the Tronics, Scrotum Poles, Puritan Guitars, Dum Dum Dum, Reacta, Exhibit A, Slight Seconds, Instant Automatons, Anorexia, Steve Treatment, Take It, Thin Yoghurts, Royston, Walking Floors and the Digital
