sounds like Teenage Fanclub playing My Bloody Valentine

20061204102356-catalysts-long-big.jpgnew EP by The Catalysts (with Ulric Kennedy, out of Scotland) after their 7’’ on Felicité. This time we have 4 songs with jangly guitars and lovely vocals, including The Girl From New York that sounds like Teenage Fanclub playing My Bloody Valentine.

Additional info: Ulric Kennedy used to play bass and sing with The Golden Dawn (Sarah Records). Before that he was lead guitarist and vocalist in The Mixers (Wha-am Records). In between the two he formed The Catalysts, whose demos finally saw the light of day when Felicite Singles Club released them as a limited edition 7’’ EP in 2004. The Long Distance EP signals a new beginning for the band, with more to follow soon, including a contribution to The Beautiful Music’s ongoing Television Personalities tribute series and an acoustic EP Wood and Metal, Skin and Bone. Elsewhere, Ulric can be heard contributing to Roy Moller’s Speak When I’m Spoken To LP and The Happy Couple’s Fools In Love EP. Highly recommended!!

Contriva, lo último de Morr

20061206111942-z-277.jpg

Curioso lo de este grupo. Dicen: "In case we're asked to describe our music we like to answer: "Its just singer / songwriter music mostly without a singer". Our actual interest is to create pop music that makes a human voice unnecessary

Onda Stereolab, Broadcast.

Nuevo single de Lucky Soul

20061207232324-luckysoul-ep.jpg

¿harán alguna vez algún single malo?

A día de hoy parece que imposible...

Lucky Soul releases their new 3-track Ain't Never Been Cool on December 11 on their own Ruffa Lane label.

Based in Greenwich in the UK Lucky Soul builds their updated version of classic pop. I Gots The Magic starts with a few notes that sound a lot like Sweet Jane in the Cowboy Junkies version with a healthy chunk of distorted guitar thrown in, Struck Dumb is a fifties pastiche and Ain't Never Been Cool is a song that Nancy Sinatra should cover making Lucky Soul tons of money in the proces.

Lovely tunes. I say it again in case you misread it the first time: lovely tunes.

Mateo Guiscafré se divierte; nosotros, no tanto

20061210095731-230p.jpg

Se tratade una colección de versiones de temas elegidos con exquisito gusto (Hot rain- Someone Else’s Love; My Guru Says- Sally and John; Po!- Appleseed Alley; Fantastic something- Drawing Rooms ; The Hit Parade- Groovy Heart Attack; The Impossibles- Meet Me Again; Carole King para The Shirelles- Will You Love Me Tomorrow?; Jacques Brel/ BMX Bandits- Carousel; Popinjays- Helicopter People; Coloring book- Time To Grow; Malcolm Eden/ Herzfeld- Two Mothers; Mosquitos- Blue Heart ;Klaus Cornfield/ Throw that beat in the garbage can- Like Christmas)

20061211084810-2533936club8.jpg

De http://www.indie-mp3.co.uk/

Concerning one of your projects, called The Legends, the songs as well as the production feels very different from album to album. Is the final outcome something that you have in mind before you even write the songs, or something that you figure out along the way?

Yes, I decide that before I write the songs. The album work starts when I've written a new song which I feels, well, really new for me. A great song with a sound that inspires me and that can lead the direction of all the other songs. Those songs were "Everything you say" (Up against the Legends), "Air" (Public Radio") and "Play it for today" (Facts and figures). After I finished the two first albums I felt there was not more to do in that particular musical style and felt I needed to change style all completely to keep it fun and inspiring. I want to keep that nice beginners feeling when I make music. Professionalism is music's worst enemy. I'm new at electronic music though so I don't think I'm finished with this quite yet.

3. This year it is 20 years since NMEs C86 was given away for free with an issue of their magazine. What is your relation to the music on this cassette and what to you put into the term C86?

The cassette was important because it defined a musical style for me. I discovered bands like McCarthy, Wolfhounds and Shop Assistants before I heard about C-86, loving them all of course, but C86 reference made it easy to discover more bands in the same style. The cassette itself really wasn't that good though.

4. Finally, please feel free to update us a little bit about on what you are working with right now.

I'm working on a new Club 8 album now. It's been a long time since we last released something so it's a bit of a comeback album it feels like. We've recorded 5 songs so far and I think it's the best stuff we've ever done.

My Favorite:

band on the c86tape: McCarthy

song ever: The Smiths "I know it's over"

instrument: Juno 106, Tambourine or Rickenbacker 330. Depends on my mood!

film: Manhattan (Woody Allen)

The Housemartins - Live at The BBC

20061211094410-0000629086.jpg

The Housemartins (fourth best band in Hull) were regular vistors to the BBC's Maida Vale studios, recording 7 sessions as well as having their Glastonbury and Nottingham concerts broadcast. This album was compiled by band member Stan Cullimore and is a wonderful retrospective of their time at the beeb. This album includes most of the material recorded for the BBC from the beginning, up until the end of the band's brief but brilliant career. It's a superb snapshot of a group of artists doing what they do best with a minimum of fuss. This is the first time that most of these recordings have been available, and for many die hard fans, it's the missing piece of the puzzle. There are songs here that never made it onto record or CD, as well as a generous chunk of a classic 1987 live set recorded in Nottingham, and a couple of numbers from their near legendary Glastonbury performance of 1986

1.Drop Down Dead (John Peel 21/07/85)
2.Flag Day (John Peel 21/07/85)
3.Stand At Ease (John Peel 21/07/85)
4.Reverends Revenge (Janice Long 6/11/85)
5.Shelter (Saturday Live 04/01/86)
6.People Get Ready (Saturday Live 04/01/86)
7.Over There (John Peel 06/04/86)
8.Caravan Of Love (John Peel 06/04/86)
9.Happy Hour (John Peel 03/06/86)
10.Heaven Help Us All (John Peel 03/06/86)
11.Pickin' The Blues (Peel Show Theme Tune) (John Peel 03/06/86)
12.Mercy (Janice Long 11/12/86)
13.So Glad (Janice Long 11/12/86)
14.He Brought Me Out (Janice Long 11/12/86)
15.Sunday Isn't Sunday (John Peel 03/11/87)
16.Build (John Peel 03/11/87)
17.We're Not Deep (Glastonbury 29/11/86)
18.Me & The Farmer (Glastonbury 29/11/86)
19.People Who Grinned Themselves To Death (Nottingham Concert 30/09/87)
20.Light Is Always Green (Nottingham Concert 30/09/87)

I Started A Blog Which Nobody Read (THE SPRITES)

O al menos eso pensaba yo... Hasta hoy.

from their album called Modern Gameplay which is set to be released by Darla Records on the 18th of September 2006.

I started a blog, which nobody read
When I went to work I blogged there instead
I started a blog, which nobody viewed
It might be in cache, the topics include:

George Bush is an evil moron
What’s the story with revolving doors?
I’m in love with a girl who doesn’t know I exist
Nobody hates preppies anymore

I started a blog, but nobody came
No issues were raised, no comments were made
I started a blog, which nobody read
I’ll admit that it wasn’t that great
But if you must know, here’s what it said:

One hundred of my favorite albums
Two hundred people I can’t take
Four hundred movies I would like to recommend
Ten celebrities, four of whom I might assassinate

I started a blog, I sent you the link
I wanted the world (you) to know what I think

I started a blog, but when I read yours
It made me forget what I had started mine for

La Banda Sonora de What Have You Done Today Mervyn Day de Saint Etienne

20061212100909-bfetienne.jpg

what have you done today mervyn day? - is a creative documentary about the lower lea valley, a vast but largely forgotten swathe of land on the east side of london on the brink of a massive redevelopment programme as it is transformed from industrial wasteland to the site of the 2012 olympic games. the film is made in a semi-dramatic style set over an imaginary one-day period on the day after the olympic decision was announced - also the day of the terrorist attacks in london. saint etienne provide the original musical score and they are a band heavily associated with london. from their first album, 'foxbase alpha' (1990), to their most recent release, the critically well received, 'tales from turnpike house' (2005) they have drawn inspiration from, and celebrated their love for london.

UN AÑO DE ANTIROCK

20061212101936-vt1005-edwyn-collins-1.jpg

20061213103533-image.jpg

(Fuente: Elefant Records)

God Save The Clientele!

20061214101558-the-clientele-mel.jpg

The new Clientele record will be recorded in Nashville in September, with Marky Nevers producing. Expect more Louis Philippe string arrangments and a slightly funkier feel. ‘God Save The Clientele’ to be ready to come caress our ears in spring 2007.

Florence: I read somewhere that you’ve written a disco track.
Is that to be included on the album? Alasdair: Yes. It’s got a very good string arrangement by Louis Philippe, who has done something incredibly pompous on top of it, so it’s now a proper disco song! Florence: Does it sit well with the rest of the album?
Alasdair: Absolutely not!

“It’s quite a schizophrenic album anyway compare to our usual style but we’ll probably still get accused of sounding the same as ever! so we’ve got a big string sound this time. It’s more of a Scott Walker type sound than an ‘Eleanor Rigby’ type sound!

Were you happy to let Louis Philippe take over your record and eventually change your sound? Alasdair: We gave him complete carte blanche and told him to do whatever he wanted to do. As a result he came up with some very unusual arrangements.
This will be the first record we haven’t mixed ourselves. We’ve made 2 or 3 records that had a similar mood all the way through, going deeper and deeper into an emotion but I wanted this one to be good humoured. I was happy to do my part and then give it to people more talented than me...I can’t write strings like Louis Philippe can write strings and I can’t record music like Marky Nevers [Lambchop] can record music...so I let them use their talent to add something to it and do something different.
Pat [from Wilco] came down for the sessions and he added a lot to what we did and I wasn’t even there, I was partying and we let him do what he wanted.

The new member We let Mel do what she wanted...a group of collaborators and friends who could add an equal amount. Mel wrote to us, through ‘mySpace’ saying that if we ever needed strings...and then the next day Brian O’Shaughnessy who produced our last album and knew what we were looking for, called me and said “there is this girl who plays amazing violin who knows all about your band and you should call her!”.

"The most beautiful and perfect song you could possibly imagine"

20061214102411-17486.jpg

Alasdair: I wish that I had written ‘My Girl’ by Smokey Robinson and The Miracles because that’s the platonic ideal of a perfect song.
It’s just the most beautiful and perfect song you could possibly imagine.

The School

Agradable y bonito. Textos extraidos de indie-mp3 y myspace. Las 2 canciones se pueden bajar de indie-mp3.co.uk ".

The School is the side project of Liz who is also a member of The Loves. Her music sounds like twee mixed in a blender with the One Kiss Can Lead to Another compilation with the results sounding like bliss to my ears.

Lazy pointers would be the likes of Lucky Soul or Saint Etienne. This is pretty impressive music to say the least considering she is all on her own at present. How wonderful will it be when she gets a full band together we can only guess.
 http://www.indie-mp3.co.uk/

My stuff sounds like bits of: Belle & Sebastian, Saturday Looks Good to Me, Camera Obscura, Jim Noir, Little My, The Beach Boys, The Beatles and 60's girl groups.

The Zoe records site also has short previews of all the tracks on the album and you can hear the complete track (and recent single) Words You Used to Say on Dean and Britta's MySpace page

Back Numbers, also produced by Visconti, picks up where L'Avventura left off, with the spotlight on Dean & Britta's laconic, dreamy vocal interplay on originals like "Words You Used to Say" and "Wait for Me," along with covers of '60s gems such as The Troggs' "Our Love Will Still Be There" and Lee Hazlewood's "You Turned My Head Around."

"Oh, the radio interviewer (JULIO RUIZ-DISCO GRANDE), having read my Friday blog entry, asked whether I'd characterize Spanish culture live on air in a couple of words. I picked "vehement" (based mostly on the taxi in from the airport) and "digital-Islamic" (based on the beautiful poster, influenced by Moorish tile design, for the achitecture show)."

NUEVO SINGLE

"If looks could kill" es la tercera canción escogida como single del tercer elepé de CAMERA OBSCURA.

Junto a la canción titular, en la edición en vinilo de tirada limitada, se incluye una cara B exclusiva y previamente inédita: una versión del clásico de Phil Spector y las PARIS SISTERS, "I love how you love me".

Vashti Bunyan, TRASH CAN SINATRAS, Scout Niblett o TEENAGE FANCLUB).

El Gurú habla

20061219164057-bob-.jpg

ECLIPSE RECORDS   Some ideas that we've come up with are a 10cc box set and a Billy Fury box set.I think with every batch that we put out there's going to be a Complete A and B Sides. There should be a Billy Fury one. We've got the Impressions, the Shangri-Las, Scott Walker, Richie Havens...

PROYECTOS  We're writing a soundtrack for that that's going to include probably half a dozen songs-- so the soundtrack will effectively be a new album. We're working on that at the moment. We haven't got a name for the film yet but it will have, like, six regular pop songs in it as well as an instrumental score.

THE CD86 COMPILATION  It's just from being a collector really. The C86 thing, it just seemed like the [20th] anniversary was going to come and go without anyone doing anything. It's funny because now [my involvement] with it makes it seem like it's my favorite genre of music that ever happened, which it isn't.

I've just got so many friends that I'm very close with now who I met at that time and through that scene. I think it really was a coming together of a generation of people of a certain bend-- although whether the actual music or the fanzines or anything that came out was of immense worth is doubtful. I think, certainly, a whole generation of music writers came out of it. A lot of friendships were made. I was upset about it, but it was a very political movement-- but with a small "p." There was a lot of fight against it. It felt like the future of pop music was at stake at the time, it really did.

BOB STANLEY PERIODISTA Mostly I write for The Times, which is good because The Times' music section is probably the least read music section of any paper in Britain [laughs]. They came after me first. They let me do stuff on books and architecture and other things that lets me spread out instead of writing just about music. That's who I've been writing for mainly. And occasionally for Mojo and a bit or two for The Guardian.

Occasionally I'll also do sleeve notes. I'm doing sleeve notes for an
Anne Briggs reissue now. Sony asked me to do it for The Time Has Come, which is coming out again, with no bonus tracks or anything. It's been deleted for a while, which I didn't even know. It's a weird thing where the CD is going for 50 or 60 quid on eBay!

EP de Versiones de Dean & Britta

20061220104818-dab-words.jpg

New Dean & Britta EP, collecting four covers and a track from the forthcoming full length, due January 30.

The Words You Used to Say EP features the title track-- an original Wareham/Phillips composition set to appear on the new record-- and a quartet of covers: Donovan's "Colours", Bobby Darin's "Distractions, Pt. 1", folkie Michael Holland's "Since I Lay My Burden Down", and yes, Adam Green's "We're Not Supposed to Be Lovers".

We're not supposed to be lovers,

Or friends like theyd have us believe.
We're not supposed to know eachother;

Accept my apology

Air

20061221104826-69lsbook-thebook-cover.jpg

"Reno Dakota, I´m not Nino Rota"   Reno Dakota--Stephin Merritt

69LS—A FIELD GUIDE is a fully illustrated history of the Magnetic Fields' 1999 triple-disc, 69 LOVE SONGS — an album that was afforded "classic" status by many upon its release. LD Beghtol's book is chatty, incestuous, funny, dark, digressive, sexy, maddening, and delightful in equal measures. It documents a vital and influential scene from the inside, involving ukuleles and tears, citations and footnotes, analogue drum machines, floods of cognac —oh, a crossword puzzle, too! The centre of the book is the secret history of these tuneful, acerbic, and sometimes heartbreaking songs of old love, new love, lost love, punk rock love, gay love, straight love, experimental music love, true love, blue love, and the utter lack of love that fill the album — as told by the album's creators, fans and critics, family and friends, imitators and naysayers, and heaps of others. This lavish little book (designed by the author) includes an extensive lexicon in the style of Ambrose Bierce’s “Devil's Dictionary," fascinating studio anecdotes and recording minutae, performance notes about the original-cast, full-album shows in New York and London, rare and unpublished images by offical TMF photgraphress Gail O'Hara and others, memorabilia, an introduction by noted music historian Ken Emerson, and much much more.

The Bridal Shop

20061226232002-1376855409-m.jpg

Esto suena mucho a The Boat Club.

The Bridal Shop is a new Swedish band. I don't know how many they are or anything. I just found out about them through Think Small and listened to them on MySpace. But they're very kind, that much I know! They let me put up this fantastic song, that will be on a forthcoming ep. If you like New Order and Sarah Records, this will most likely be your cup of tea. Enjoy (no extra sugar needed)!

Atención a la primera, es un hit.

From Drag City:

It's a sweet, string-laden collection of tunes covering a diverse array of topics in the world of The High Llamas backed this time with an acoustic assembly including backup singers and a few drumbeats for that good pop album feeling.

Single CD Navideño de Saint Etienne

20061230221718-christmas2006..jpg

Las dos canciones están realmente bien

Saint Etienne had a special Christmas party/dj/concert event at the Turntable Cafe at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on London's South Bank Centre on the 21st of December where they handed out, to the lucky ones in attendance, a 2 track CDEP containing the new tracks 21st Century Christmas (an awesome cover of the Cliff Richard Christmas hit!) and Through the Winter.
