El regreso de Roddy Frame
Esto publica la web killermoonstreet.com (aunque en absoluto pienso que esto sea "a masterpiece". Es un rollazo de disco, aunque tiene una buena: "Day of reckoning", que es el single)
Roddy’s newest CD, Western Skies on Redemption Records, is set to be released on Monday, May 1st. It features ten new songs, plus a new version of the title track which Roddy co-wrote with Lazyboy in 2004. Fans who loved the wholly acoustic Surf CD will not be disappointed by Western Skies. It has the best elements of his entire body of work, even going back to his jazz lounge Postcard days. It’s got the unpredictability of Stray and the intimacy of Surf... but with a subtle dark edge and slightly more polish. It’s warm and organic with arrangements that are adequately sparse. A few tracks are entirely acoustic, others have some percussion, piano and double-bass sprinkled in. Because each song on it is so completely different from the next, fans will likely have a difficult time agreeing on a favorite track. It is, simply, a masterpiece.
Advance previews of tracks from the new album have been (and will be) heard and made available in a number of places. ’Day of Reckoning’, which will likely be the album’s first single, has already started getting some airplay on BBC Radio. A streaming preview of ’The Coast’ can be found on Redemption’s My Space page. Uncut Magazine will feature ’Shore Song’ and Word Magazine will include ’Marble Arch’ on covermount CDs of their first-week May issues. And, of course, live, pre-album recordings of ’Rock God’ and ’Dry Land’ can be heard on Roddy’s new Live at Ronnie Scott’s CD which can be purchased on his official web site.

Another super snazzy Pop single that’s been playing lots here has been The Legends’ ‘Play It For Today’. Like the Irene single, this is on the ludicrously prolific and classy Labrador label, and is as catchy and quirky as you should have come to expect. More electronically orientated than their stunning dreampop drenched debut Up Against The Legends set, but not as Cure infected as the Public Radio album, this sees The Legends finding some kind of marvellous middle ground where kids daydream of pink plastic keyboards and heart shaped rose coloured glasses. And I swear if I were sixteen today I would be wandering the corridors of my school with a Legends badge proudly pinned to my purple lapel, rebuffing the taunts of my asymmetrically haircutted peers and forging my lonely furrow into the future. As it is, I’ve got ‘Play It For Today’ ringing out in my head and in my heart, filling me with the urge to get up and get out, to continue to plough that same furrow for today and evermore. It reminds me that no matter where you are, no matter how invisible and isolate you feel, you can always have a friend in music, can always rely on the strength of song to pull you through.

The Wedding Present will be releasing "Search for Paradise: Singles 2004-5" in May.
The CD of this double disc collection features the A-sides of the three singles from last year's critically-acclaimed "Take Fountain" album together with all the B-sides plus previously unreleased acoustic versions of the A-sides. The DVD contains the videos made for the singles and also one for the outstanding album track "Don't Touch That Dial" together with a film made for an acoustic live version of "Perfect Blue" and bonus 'behind the scenes' footage.

It’s such a big pleasure for me to release this compilation-cd by simply one of the best Bands ever from the so called C86 scene. The Nivens were around between 1987 – 1990. During that time they had three releases on the legendary Woosh label, including such classics as “Yesterday” or “Northumberland”. “From A Northumbrian Mining Village Comes The Sound Of Summer” feat. all these songs plus tracks recorded for their only Demotape.
All these brilliant songs bring back memories of drunken nights at a friends place. We always played The Nivens then and danced in my friends rooms.
It also reminds me of the summerholidays spending in Great Britain. I first heard “Yesterday” while buying records in a shop nearby Hastings. Unfortunately the seller didn’t seems to like my face, so he decided not to sell his last copy to me. Instead I bought “Yesterday” a day later from a shop in London.
In the early 90ies me and a friend had a discussion about what was the best flexidisc ever released. We never shared the same favourites but this night we agreed to each other that the winner is “Let Loose Of My Knee” by The Nivens.
While listen to the album I noticed that a song like “Christie Norden” still means everythings to me.

Jarvis no defrauda
El próximo día 13 de marzo saldrá a la venta The Trip: Created by Jarvis Cocker and Steve Mackey. Se trata de un álbum recopilatorio en el que Cocker (Pulp) y Mackey parecen haber investigado en antiguos y extraños vinilos de no se sabe dónde, para componer un autentico viaje de rarezas musicales.
24 Sycamore por Gene Pitney o Feel Flows por los Beach Boys tienen esa pátina de polvo arqueológico que acompaña siempre a las joyas escondidas. Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark haciendo el Waiting for the man de la Velvet Underground o la increible fusión de folk y blues que perpetra Arlo Guthrie en I’m Going Home son cosas que uno no debería perderse. Para bien o para mal. Y si tienes estómago para encajarlo que menos que el sermón antidrogas de Sonny Bono en Pammies on a Bummer. Pero si hay algo en este disco que realmente merezca la pena, dicen, será la versión del Desolation Row de Bob Dylan que John Cooper Clarke transmuta en Beasley Street.
En definitiva, 2 discos, 35 temas y 2 horas de música para oidos exquisitos y faltos de experiencias novedosas

La BDSL llegará a los hogares dentro de cinco años

La futura generación de Internet llegará a los hogares en un máximo de cinco años, según un experto.
El coordinador de la Red de Excelencia Europea Euro-NGI, Daniel Kofman, ha asegurado en la Universidad Politécnica de Valencia que en un plazo máximo de cinco años todos los usuarios podrán disfrutar de las prestaciones de las redes de Internet de Próxima Generación (NGI), a través de conexiones de fibra óptica.
Actualmente, las conexiones ADSL y ADSL2 permiten hasta 20 megas de ancho banda y la generación siguiente, llamada BDSL, que ya es una realidad industrial, llega hasta los 100 megas. Según explicó Kofman, "gracias a la generalización de la fibra óptica, que llegará a todos los usuarios en un plazo de tres a cinco años, podremos disponer de un ancho de banda prácticamente infinito, con los beneficios que ello conlleva a la hora de reducir el tiempo de respuesta de Internet".
"El Internet del futuro será un fenómeno global y ubicuo, al que se podrá acceder desde cualquier punto, adaptándose en cada momento a las tecnologías existentes en nuestro entorno" según Kofman, que destacó que además de permitir una movilidad entre tecnologías diferentes, las redes NGI posibilitarán al usuario una movilidad entre múltiples soportes.
"Por ejemplo, se podrá pasar de una conversación vía móvil en la calle a una videoconferencia en el puesto de trabajo con el mismo interlocutor y sin sufrir ningún corte en la conexión", señaló.

El primer single, que saldrá a la venta en mayo, será "Lloyd, I'm ready to be heartbroken": un tema de country soul con un ritmo irresistible y un final exultante, en el que Tracyanne se las arregla para cantar hasta seis estribillos sin que se resienta la estructura de la canción. Messthetics Greatest Hits - The Sounds of UK DIY 1977-80
Bob Stanley escribe una articulillo en The Guardian sobre The Sounds of UK DIY 1977-80 (¿ha dejado The Times? Parece que no: aquí hay una crítica suya sobre el nuevo lp de The Concretes http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,22875-2073552,00.html)
En concreto en The Guardian escribe sobre una recopilación que se ha publicado sobre grupos ingleses de la etapa punk/nuevaolera bastante desconocidos -faltaría más- y que creo que es lo último que quedaba por reivindicar después de que la gente se haya vuelta loca sobre el sonido punk-funk inglés. Por tanto parece que el Stanley pretende convertirse en el adalid reivindicativo de bandas como Danny and the Dressmakers, the Thin Yoghurts, the Mud Hutters, Steve Treatment, Take It y demás nombres que dudo mucho que los conozcan en su casa a la hora de comer. Lo más divertido del artículo es lo que comenta de The Homosexuals ("and the Homosexuals who weren’t, but were often beaten up for their name anyway")...

Y en la web de sello descubro que hay hasta 8 cds de Messthetics... Lo que se publica ahora es una especie de grandes éxitos de esos 8 volumenes e incluye primeras grabaciones de Scritti Politti y diversas bandas que luego fueron el germen de Weekend, TV Personalities e incluso The Sound (hay alguna canción de Second Layer donde según leo estaba Adrian Bordland) El resto del catálogo del sello Hyped To Death está dedicado al power pop (bajo las series "Homework") y al punk USA ("Teenline"). Y los superventas del sello son The Shivers (powerpop) y, faltaría más, The Homosexuals.
