God Save The Clientele!

God Save The Clientele!

The new Clientele record will be recorded in Nashville in September, with Marky Nevers producing. Expect more Louis Philippe string arrangments and a slightly funkier feel. ‘God Save The Clientele’ to be ready to come caress our ears in spring 2007.

Florence: I read somewhere that you’ve written a disco track.
Is that to be included on the album? Alasdair: Yes. It’s got a very good string arrangement by Louis Philippe, who has done something incredibly pompous on top of it, so it’s now a proper disco song! Florence: Does it sit well with the rest of the album?
Alasdair: Absolutely not!

“It’s quite a schizophrenic album anyway compare to our usual style but we’ll probably still get accused of sounding the same as ever! so we’ve got a big string sound this time. It’s more of a Scott Walker type sound than an ‘Eleanor Rigby’ type sound!

Were you happy to let Louis Philippe take over your record and eventually change your sound? Alasdair: We gave him complete carte blanche and told him to do whatever he wanted to do. As a result he came up with some very unusual arrangements.
This will be the first record we haven’t mixed ourselves. We’ve made 2 or 3 records that had a similar mood all the way through, going deeper and deeper into an emotion but I wanted this one to be good humoured. I was happy to do my part and then give it to people more talented than me...I can’t write strings like Louis Philippe can write strings and I can’t record music like Marky Nevers [Lambchop] can record music...so I let them use their talent to add something to it and do something different.
Pat [from Wilco] came down for the sessions and he added a lot to what we did and I wasn’t even there, I was partying and we let him do what he wanted.

The new member We let Mel do what she wanted...a group of collaborators and friends who could add an equal amount. Mel wrote to us, through ‘mySpace’ saying that if we ever needed strings...and then the next day Brian O’Shaughnessy who produced our last album and knew what we were looking for, called me and said “there is this girl who plays amazing violin who knows all about your band and you should call her!”.

what have you done today mervyn day? - is a creative documentary about the lower lea valley, a vast but largely forgotten swathe of land on the east side of london on the brink of a massive redevelopment programme as it is transformed from industrial wasteland to the site of the 2012 olympic games. the film is made in a semi-dramatic style set over an imaginary one-day period on the day after the olympic decision was announced - also the day of the terrorist attacks in london. saint etienne provide the original musical score and they are a band heavily associated with london. from their first album, 'foxbase alpha' (1990), to their most recent release, the critically well received, 'tales from turnpike house' (2005) they have drawn inspiration from, and celebrated their love for london.

from their album called Modern Gameplay which is set to be released by Darla Records on the 18th of September 2006.

I started a blog, which nobody read
When I went to work I blogged there instead
I started a blog, which nobody viewed
It might be in cache, the topics include:

George Bush is an evil moron
What’s the story with revolving doors?
I’m in love with a girl who doesn’t know I exist
Nobody hates preppies anymore

I started a blog, but nobody came
No issues were raised, no comments were made
I started a blog, which nobody read
I’ll admit that it wasn’t that great
But if you must know, here’s what it said:

One hundred of my favorite albums
Two hundred people I can’t take
Four hundred movies I would like to recommend
Ten celebrities, four of whom I might assassinate

I started a blog, I sent you the link
I wanted the world (you) to know what I think

I started a blog, but when I read yours
It made me forget what I had started mine for

The Housemartins - Live at The BBC

The Housemartins - Live at The BBC

The Housemartins (fourth best band in Hull) were regular vistors to the BBC's Maida Vale studios, recording 7 sessions as well as having their Glastonbury and Nottingham concerts broadcast. This album was compiled by band member Stan Cullimore and is a wonderful retrospective of their time at the beeb. This album includes most of the material recorded for the BBC from the beginning, up until the end of the band's brief but brilliant career. It's a superb snapshot of a group of artists doing what they do best with a minimum of fuss. This is the first time that most of these recordings have been available, and for many die hard fans, it's the missing piece of the puzzle. There are songs here that never made it onto record or CD, as well as a generous chunk of a classic 1987 live set recorded in Nottingham, and a couple of numbers from their near legendary Glastonbury performance of 1986

1.Drop Down Dead (John Peel 21/07/85)
2.Flag Day (John Peel 21/07/85)
3.Stand At Ease (John Peel 21/07/85)
4.Reverends Revenge (Janice Long 6/11/85)
5.Shelter (Saturday Live 04/01/86)
6.People Get Ready (Saturday Live 04/01/86)
7.Over There (John Peel 06/04/86)
8.Caravan Of Love (John Peel 06/04/86)
9.Happy Hour (John Peel 03/06/86)
10.Heaven Help Us All (John Peel 03/06/86)
11.Pickin' The Blues (Peel Show Theme Tune) (John Peel 03/06/86)
12.Mercy (Janice Long 11/12/86)
13.So Glad (Janice Long 11/12/86)
14.He Brought Me Out (Janice Long 11/12/86)
15.Sunday Isn't Sunday (John Peel 03/11/87)
16.Build (John Peel 03/11/87)
17.We're Not Deep (Glastonbury 29/11/86)
18.Me & The Farmer (Glastonbury 29/11/86)

Breve entrevista con Johan Angergård

Breve entrevista con Johan Angergård

De http://www.indie-mp3.co.uk/

Concerning one of your projects, called The Legends, the songs as well as the production feels very different from album to album. Is the final outcome something that you have in mind before you even write the songs, or something that you figure out along the way?

Yes, I decide that before I write the songs. The album work starts when I've written a new song which I feels, well, really new for me. A great song with a sound that inspires me and that can lead the direction of all the other songs. Those songs were "Everything you say" (Up against the Legends), "Air" (Public Radio") and "Play it for today" (Facts and figures). After I finished the two first albums I felt there was not more to do in that particular musical style and felt I needed to change style all completely to keep it fun and inspiring. I want to keep that nice beginners feeling when I make music. Professionalism is music's worst enemy. I'm new at electronic music though so I don't think I'm finished with this quite yet.

3. This year it is 20 years since NMEs C86 was given away for free with an issue of their magazine. What is your relation to the music on this cassette and what to you put into the term C86?

The cassette was important because it defined a musical style for me. I discovered bands like McCarthy, Wolfhounds and Shop Assistants before I heard about C-86, loving them all of course, but C86 reference made it easy to discover more bands in the same style. The cassette itself really wasn't that good though.

4. Finally, please feel free to update us a little bit about on what you are working with right now.

I'm working on a new Club 8 album now. It's been a long time since we last released something so it's a bit of a comeback album it feels like. We've recorded 5 songs so far and I think it's the best stuff we've ever done.

My Favorite:

band on the c86tape: McCarthy

song ever: The Smiths "I know it's over"

instrument: Juno 106, Tambourine or Rickenbacker 330. Depends on my mood!

film: Manhattan (Woody Allen)

Se tratade una colección de versiones de temas elegidos con exquisito gusto (Hot rain- Someone Else’s Love; My Guru Says- Sally and John; Po!- Appleseed Alley; Fantastic something- Drawing Rooms ; The Hit Parade- Groovy Heart Attack; The Impossibles- Meet Me Again; Carole King para The Shirelles- Will You Love Me Tomorrow?; Jacques Brel/ BMX Bandits- Carousel; Popinjays- Helicopter People; Coloring book- Time To Grow; Malcolm Eden/ Herzfeld- Two Mothers; Mosquitos- Blue Heart ;Klaus Cornfield/ Throw that beat in the garbage can- Like Christmas)

Lucky Soul releases their new 3-track Ain't Never Been Cool on December 11 on their own Ruffa Lane label.

Based in Greenwich in the UK Lucky Soul builds their updated version of classic pop. I Gots The Magic starts with a few notes that sound a lot like Sweet Jane in the Cowboy Junkies version with a healthy chunk of distorted guitar thrown in, Struck Dumb is a fifties pastiche and Ain't Never Been Cool is a song that Nancy Sinatra should cover making Lucky Soul tons of money in the proces.

Lovely tunes. I say it again in case you misread it the first time: lovely tunes.

Curioso lo de este grupo. Dicen: "In case we're asked to describe our music we like to answer: "Its just singer / songwriter music mostly without a singer". Our actual interest is to create pop music that makes a human voice unnecessary

Peel Session de Motorcycle Boy

sounds like Teenage Fanclub playing My Bloody Valentine

sounds like Teenage Fanclub playing My Bloody Valentine

new EP by The Catalysts (with Ulric Kennedy, out of Scotland) after their 7’’ on Felicité. This time we have 4 songs with jangly guitars and lovely vocals, including The Girl From New York that sounds like Teenage Fanclub playing My Bloody Valentine.

Additional info: Ulric Kennedy used to play bass and sing with The Golden Dawn (Sarah Records). Before that he was lead guitarist and vocalist in The Mixers (Wha-am Records). In between the two he formed The Catalysts, whose demos finally saw the light of day when Felicite Singles Club released them as a limited edition 7’’ EP in 2004. The Long Distance EP signals a new beginning for the band, with more to follow soon, including a contribution to The Beautiful Music’s ongoing Television Personalities tribute series and an acoustic EP Wood and Metal, Skin and Bone. Elsewhere, Ulric can be heard contributing to Roy Moller’s Speak When I’m Spoken To LP and The Happy Couple’s Fools In Love EP. Highly recommended!!
