Dicen que cuando uno disfruta con Van Morrison es que se ha hecho ya mayor. Bien, creo que ya me ha llegado ese momento... 

Van Morrison reúne en un Doble CD, bajo el título, 'Still On Top – The Greatest Hits', 37 temas clásicos de su larga trayectoria. La selección fue realizada personalmente por el 'león de Belfast', que incluye los temas más conocidos de su prolífica carrera. El recopilatorio incluye clásicos de cinco décadas junto con grabaciones correspondientes a los últimos años, como: “Days Like This” (1995), una versión alternativa de 1997 de “Healing Game” y dos temas de 2005 que ya se han convertido en clásicos como: “Celtic New Year” y “Stranded”. “Still On Top” se mueve suavemente entre géneros, reflejando una carrera que empezó en los 60 con “Here Comes The Night”, “Gloria” y “Brown Eyed Girl”. Exitos de los 70 como “Domino”, “Jackie Wilson Said” y “ Warm Love”. Regresa Glenn Mercer (Ex The Feelies)

Glenn Mercer s first-ever solo album Wheels In Motion seems to come at a time when other influential artists are busy reuniting and reconnecting with past material. But former lead singer, guitarist & composer of the highly influential band The Feelies chooses another path by delivering a hypnotic, highly melodic and often reflective album. After a 5-year hiatus from his last recording project Wake Ooloo, Glenn seems re-energized, re-focused and not afraid to lead us through his personal journey while showing us his influence by artists he knows, respects and admires such as Velvet Underground, Bob Dylan & Luna. Beachfield: Obsesión por The Go Betweens

Glenn Thompson formed the Beachfield to play songs he had written since the demise of his former musical group Custard, with whom he was the drummer and sometimes singer. Glenn also played drums for the Go-Betweens.The debut album "Brighton Bothways" will be released in Europe in October thru Tuition. To listen to more songs go to Beachfield 2. Glenn recently recorded a Go-Betweens tribute album "Write Your Adventures Down" with Adele Pickvance and many of Australia's favourite recording artists. The CD will be released thru the Red Label in Australia on June 16.

IDEAL FREE DISTRIBUTION: los protegidos de Robert Schneider (The Apples in Stereo)

Inside your raincoat you find a plastic pocketwatch. It is chiming. Now is the time for the Ideal Free Distribution. The makings of the Ideal Free Distribution came together in 1997 when Eric Griffy, Tony Miller, and Craig Morris decided to make some recordings in Eric's bedroom of some of the primitive ramblings trapped in their heads. Often crude and amateurish, the songs nonetheless had a unique sound and vision that encouraged the three to keep it up. Inspired by Scott Walker, Belle and Sebastian, Beach Boys, and the more obscure elements of the psychedelic genre, they pressed on with the creative process. In a few months, the songs became respectable enough to play for others, and good enough to keep the group recording more material. As their maturity as songwriters grew, some of these new songs (about 50/50) were absolutely wonderful. However, since these new recordings were made in the boys' tiny hometown of Benton, Kentucky, they would never see any release beyond that of compilation cassettes passed around to friends and family. The advantage of this obscurity was that the band was able to learn to cull their weaker songs and focus their efforts on tunes that were worthwhile. The culmination of these developments began to appear in 2003 and 2004 as Eric, Tony, and Craig began writing material for their forthcoming single (Saturday Drive/Apples and Oranges) and LP. With a full lineup due to the addition of Joe Drury on keyboard and guitar, Mike Grote on drums, Marci Schneider on mellotron and castinets, Shelly Morris on vocals and percussion, and Samantha Herald on accessory percussion and vocals, Robert Schneider of The Apples in Stereo heard and loved the demos for these new songs, and his enthusiasm has spread throughout the psychedelic underground who happened to hear them. Through Robert, the band found a home in Athens, Georgia’s Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records. Mike Turner, head of the label, caught wind of the band via the undeniable enthusiasm that Robert had for the band. With such a respected recommendation, HHBTM Records gave Ideal Free Distribution the proper home that it deserves. Along with his unwavering enthusiasm for the band, Robert mixed and pre-mastered the album to give it that wonderful sound it has now. Jason Nesmith of Casper and the Cookies did the final mastering in order to give it the shimmering quality that the music deserves. The new LP is full of impossibly catchy melodies sung by vocalist Tony Miller, bathed in lush beds of guitars, strings, pounding drums, and Eric Griffy's inventive, assertive bass work. El Mojo y la New Wave

Curioso: si vas a la web del mojo te encuentras con que en la portada de la revista sale Liam Gallagher. Sin embargo en la edición que se vende en España está Blondie en la portada. Es evidente que la revista cree que con el bobo de los Gallagher en la portada van a vender más números en UK pero no en Europa... Lo mejor es que el asunto principal de la revista es un “The A-Z of the New Wave” con el subtítulo de “Where Pop metes Punk”. Vale la pena

Se me acumulan las novedades. Me pongo al día

Voy a actualizar un poco el blog de una tajada. Así que voy a comentar un poco lo último que estoy escuchando entre tanta maraña de novedades. La mayoría son cosas que no destacan precisamente por su originalidad, sino por sus evocaciones. Por ejemplo, BLANCHE (disco de la semana en Grand Prix) suena exactamente como los discos de Lee Hazlewood y Nancy Sinatra. El cantante es que le imita hasta la voz, pero las canciones son realmente buenas. “Little Amber Bottles” es su segundo lp y son de Detroit. PAT DINIZIO fue el cantante de The Smithereens y creo que acaba de editar su primer lp en solitario y suena exactamente igual que un (buen) disco de su grupo. ROISIN MURPHY fue la cantante de Moloko y ahora es una diva de la música disco. En el último Mojo habla y no para de Diana Ross y Jackie Moore, pero ella le da un toque de excentricidad y modernez propio del 2007. Sus clips son realmente curiosos y divertidos.

Cambiando de tercio el otro día escuché la sesión de Samuel Rodríguez en Islas de Robinson en Radio 3 y escuché varios hits: a anotar: The Singles “Summer”, Nick Lowe & Chrissie Hynde “People Change”, Fountains of Wayne “Fire in the Canyon”, They Might Be Giants “The Mesopotamians”. El programa de puede escuhar en la web de radio nacional. También escuché un grupo llamado The Psychedelic Cowboys, pero dicho disco no lo he podido conseguir.

En el programa de Popcasting de Jaime Souvenir (¿quién dijo que la radio estaba muerta) sonó una chica francesa llamada YELLE que parece una versión yeyé-electro pop a la francesa (los de Source están detrás). “Tristesse Joie” está muy bien. Otros franceses que han editado cosas son DOMINIQUE A, con un directo llamado “Sur nos forces motrices” (con un temazo llamado “L´amour”) y MURAT con “Charles & Leo” (poemas de Charles Baudelaire y música de Leo Ferré)

En el apartado de reediciones, se ha editado la BSO de una película de Basquiat llamada “Dowtown” que refleja a la perfección lo que era Nueva York en el año 81. Desde la divertida frivolidad de Kid Creole/Coati Mundi con su funk latino hasta el disco vanguardista de James White pasando por el pop de plástico de The Plastics. La banda favorita de los Rem siempre han sido sus paisanos de Athens PYLON. Ellos también son reivindicados por LCD Soundsystem que ahora reeditan en su sello propio “Gyrate” del que dicen que deben mucho. No me extraña. Pylon hacían pop oblicuo que no les proporcionó ventas pero si reputación. A la vista está. THE RASPBERRIES publican ahora un cd y dvd con su reaparición del 2005. “Live on Sunset Strip 2005” me ha sorprendido por su energía y fiereza. La versión del “I wanna be with you” es para tumbarte de espaldas.

En el apartado indie, poco hay. El ep de debut de las suecas THOSE DANCING DAYS para Wichita y poco más. Ah bueno, que esto ya lo comenté... Bueno, también he conseguido un curioso single de THE RUMBLE STRIPS en el que versionean el “Back to Black” de Amy Winehouse (¡ella!) en una cara y en la otra la remezclan.

Fatboy Slim - Late Night Tales

El exHousemartin se lo pasa bomba pinchando y yo escuchándolo. Empieza en plan new wave (Mink de Ville-J.Richman-Nick Lowe) y acaba con ¡Robert Mitchum, Taj Mahal, Tom Jobim o Sly Stone) y en medio soul, reggae, country y cualquier cosa que se os ocurra, incluso una divertida versión del “Radioctivity” propia. Curiosidad: las grabaciones no son originales, sino están extraídas de vinilos... Entrañable el texto de la contraportada donde cuenta lo bien que se lo pasaban él y Paul Heaton intercambiándose cassettes y descubriéndose música recíprocamente.

Jim Ford, el padre musical de Nick Lowe

Sigo con los coletazos de la escucha de los amigos del Grand Prix en Las Islas de Robinson. Pusieron a un tal Jim Ford del que dijeron que era la gran influencia de Nick Lowe y compañía (Lowe versioneó en “Jesús of Cool” una canción de él titulada “36 Inches High”) y que la edición de “The Sounds of Our Time” era la reedición del año. La canción que pusieron no me dijo mucho pero acabo de conseguir el lp y es realmente brillante y tiene una biografía realmente interesante. Aquí os la dejo:

Noche de FútbolPop: Me lo pasé bomba

Pues si. Bajé el volumen del Tv y estuve viendo el Dinamarca 1 España 3 y a la vez oyendo la sesión de los responsables del programa de radio Grand Prix, que hicieron en Las Islas de Robinson en Radio 3 –coincidió el horario de las dos cosas, de 20 a 22 h- y me lo pasé bomba. Aquí os dejo el listado de lo que pusieron (subrayado lo que más me gustó/sorprendió), aunque hay cosas que no me gustaron mucho (Black Lips, band of Horses, Electric Prunes o los ahora para mi odiosos Stone Roses) y otras me resultaron simpáticas, como el nuevo grupo de Jon Spencer, Heavy Trash. Por cierto, fue curioso comprobar como tanto el de Islas de Robinson como los de Grand Prix compran sus discos en Radio City, la tienda que –parece- marca la tendencia en determinados ámbitos madrileños (http://www.radiocitydiscos.com/). Mario Suau (The Shoestrings) lo descubrió para la indiepoplist y Carlos me lo descubrió a mi. Es “My newest Norwegian indie-pop crush”. Y no sólo sus canciones son preciosas, es que la portada del disco es la portada más bonita del 2007. TODO es precioso aquí.

The Wedding Present are about to release a double CD of live recordings from 1987, the year that their classic debut album ‘George Best’ was released.

‘LIVE 1987’ compiles the first two of The Wedding Present’s popular ‘Live Tapes’, a series of official bootleg cassettes that the band sold by mail order in the 1980s. These rare recordings were not available anywhere else and were eagerly collected by fans.

Luis Puig hijo (ex colaborador de la conjura de las danzas, ex rock de lux, fanático de Costello y funcionario de la universidad –se encarga del Luis Vives y de sus conciertos) está de año sabático y promete contarnos que tal se lo está pasando. Por lo pronto acudió al concierto de Merzow (ruido japonés de vanguardia) y nos deja esta perla: “–Este japo no ha oído nunca una mascletà"decir a alguien mientras abandonaba la sala.

To most, Vashti Bunyan simply materialized from the great musical ether sometime circa 2004 (when her lone LP at the time, 1970's Just Another Diamond Day, was unearthed and reissued). But the fact is she was making delicate, wholesome, homespun folk tunes even before the days of Diamond. These pre-Diamond gems-- two discs full of 'em-- will comprise a special collection of Vashti's early works that FatCat plans to release abroad on October 8. t's titled Some Things Just Stick in Your Mind - Early Singles and Demos 1964-1967 and that Vashti's U.S. label, DiCristina Stair Builders, intends to unleash the beast Stateside as well on October 16. To help get the kids amped for early Bunyan, FatCat will reissue Vashti's very first single, "Some Things Just Stick in Your Mind"-- originally released in 1965 under just the artist's first name-- on September 10 overseas. Vashti recorded the A-side, a tune penned by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards (possibly members of some band of note), with a full orchestra. Meanwhile, the flip, "I Want to Be Alone", has Vashti being just that. The 7" is limited to 1,000 copies, but if you miss out, fret not: both jams will also feature on the two-disc set. UPDATE: DiCristina Stair Builders will release this single in the U.S. on September 18 in 7" and digital formats.

Helena l'actrice, Helena le mannequin, Helena l'écrivain, Helena la soeur de Lio, Helena la femme de Katerine et bien sûr Helena la chanteuse ! Le moins que l'on puisse dire c'est qu'Helena Noguerra possède de multiples facettes. En tant que chanteuse, Helena en est à son cinquième album. Fraise Vanille sort un an après Bang ! Dillinger Girl And 'Baby Face' Nelson (avec Federico Pellegrini, guitariste des Little Rabbits).

Fraise Vanille est un album enchanteur formé de reprises des années 60. Un disque entièrement dédié à l'univers gourmand et magique de l'auteur, peintre et romancier Serge Rezvani (alias Bassiak). Plusieurs de ses chansons, à l'époque, ont été interprétées par Jeanne Moreau et Anna Karina. Il est notamment l'auteur des inoubliables Tourbillon et J'ai la mémoire qui flanche.

D'autres personnalités comme Vincent Delerm (Les mots de rien), Marie-France (Jamais je ne t'ai dit...), Serge Rezvani (Nous vivions deux) et Katerine (La bécasse) accompagnent la belle Helena dans cette aventure. L'album comporte également un inédit, le sautillant Caresse-moi, j'adore ça.
