I love this city. But not the policemen with machine-guns casually slung across chests, sauntering down Victoria Street. I remember, on my first trip abroad, the shock of spotting pistol-packing gendarmes – I’d never seen a gun before. Since then, I’ve had my LA Metro ticket scanned at gunpoint and my passport stamped on the train from Budapest by Slovakian border-guards toting rifles Mr Mainwaring would deem antique, but those were all weird, foreign, uncivilised places.

The Snowdrops

The Snowdrops

SLEEPYDUST EP (MATINEE)

the second single from mysterious matinee musicmakers the snowdrops, an occasional collaboration of indie legends keith girdler (blueboy, beaumont, arabesque, lovejoy), dick preece (lovejoy, beaumont) and pam berry (the pines, shapiros, black tambourine, glo worm). the new ep features five tracks including a pet shop boys-inspired title track with brilliant lead vocals from keith plus backing from pam. other tracks include a beautiful atmospheric number called 'too cold to snow', 'the wonderful the boy with the hummingbird eyes' featuring dick on lead vocals and a guest appearance from keris howard (harper lee, brighter), a short one called 'teddy dragons' and a remix of 'sleepydust' with more pam (always a good thing) and some other nice touches. limited to 1000 copies in custom minijacket sleeve

The Greatest Christmas song of all time

The Greatest Christmas song of all time

THE POGUES FEATURING KIRSTY MACCOLL

FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK
the greatest christmas song of all time, first released in 1987 gets re-released and hopefully will be christmas number one as it was cruelly kept off the top spot by the pet shop boys. macgowan and the sadly departed maccoll sing all over each other, slurring words and tossing insults. ’fairytale of new york’ oozes urban decay, poverty, alcoholism and general dysfunction. it’s not only the most beautiful, but the best christmas song humanity has ever made. the 7" comes backed with ’the battle march medley’
It was christmas eve babe
In the drunk tank
An old man said to me, won’t see another one
And then he sang a song
The rare old mountain dew
I turned my face away
And dreamed about you

Got on a lucky one
Came in eighteen to one
I’ve got a feeling
This year’s for me and you
So happy christmas
I love you baby
I can see a better time
When all our dreams come true

They’ve got cars big as bars
They’ve got rivers of gold
But the wind goes right through you
It’s no place for the old
When you first took my hand
On a cold christmas eve
You promised me
Broadway was waiting for me

You were handsome
You were pretty
Queen of new york city
When the band finished playing
They howled out for more
Sinatra was swinging,
All the drunks they were singing
We kissed on a corner
Then danced through the night

The boys of the nypd choir
Were singing galway bay
And the bells were ringing out
For christmas day

You’re a bum
You’re a punk
You’re an old slut on junk
Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed
You scumbag, you maggot
You cheap lousy faggot
Happy christmas your arse
I pray God it’s our last

I could have been someone
Well so could anyone
You took my dreams from me
When I first found you
I kept them with me babe
I put them with my own
Can’t make it all alone
I’ve built my dreams around you

Daydream Believer

Daydream Believer

"Daydream Believer" de The Monkees es la canción perfecta. Es directa y claramente feliz. Hay canciones mucho mejores y no escogería esta como mi canción favorita pero creo que sirve como perfecto ejemplo de pura y extraordinaria música pop. Me gustan las canciones con grandes coros, esas canciones en las que cuando entra el coro sientes que sólo quieres cantar y saltar y es el momento más maravilloso y  expansivo de tu vida"

Declaraciones de Carl Newman (The New Pornographers, AC Newman y ex Zumpano) a Go Magazine

Oh I could hide ’neath the wings
Of the bluebird as she sings
The six o’clock alarm would never ring
But it rings and I rise
Wipe the sleep out of my eyes
My shaving razors cold and it stings

Cheer up sleepy Jean
Oh what can it mean
To a daydream believer
And a homecoming queen

You once thought of me
As a white knight on his steed
Now you know how happy I can be
Oh and our good times start and end
Without dollar one to spend
But how much baby do we really need

Cheer up sleepy Jean
Oh what can it mean
To a daydream believer
And a homecoming queen

Libro de Comics sobre Belle & Sebastian

Libro de Comics sobre Belle & Sebastian

Scottish indie pop sensations Belle & Sebastian make their first foray into the four-color world in a very different approach to the comics anthology in Image Comics' PUT THE BOOK BACK ON THE SHELF: A BELLE & SEBASTIAN ANTHOLOGY GN.

Now, the band's colorful lyrics and gorgeous, full-bodied melodies have provided Image Comics with the inspiration for a new kind of comics anthology. With the full-color, 144-page PUT THE BOOK BACK ON THE SHELF, a stellar collection of independent comic creators and cartoonists put their own spins on a cross section of Belle and Sebastian's songs, crafting stories inspired by the band's music, drawn from the band's entire catalog.

PUT THE BOOK BACK ON THE SHELF: A BELLE & SEBASTIAN ANTHOLOGY GN is tentatively scheduled for a February 22nd release

The autors: Anthology
B.Clay Moore, Jacob Magraw, Catia Chen, Janet Harvey, Laurenn McCubbin, Bruno D'Angelo, Charles Brownstein, Dave Crosland, Jen De Guzman, Brian Belew

Cat Power, la más grande

Cat Power, la más grande

Once I wanted to be the greatest
No wind or water fall could stop me
And then came the rush of the flood
The stars at night turned you to dust

On January 24, 2006, Matador will be releasing the long-awaited new studio album from Cat Power, ’The Greatest’ on CD and LP in most major industrial countries

Recorded at Memphis, TN’s Ardent Studios over the summer by Stuart Sikes, ’The Greatest’ while the most confident and life-affirming work of Chan Marshall’s career, is as intensely personal, haunting and provocative as any of its predecessors. The album’s players are a bona fide All-Star team of Memphis musicians, including Al Green sideman Teenie Hodges on guitar, Leroy "Flick" Hodges and David Smith on bass, Rick Steff on keys, Jim Spake on sax and trumpteer Scott Thompson amongst others.

Greatest adds to Cat Power’s singular sound all the elements that make an Al Green record great: Memphis horns, funky string arrangements, smooth background vocals. Many songs hearken back to earlier in Cat Power’s career, like the surface simplicity of “Willie”—much more complicated upon deeper listen—and like “Where Is My Love,” which sounds like it could be the first song she ever wrote, and also the one to which she has always aspired. “Living Proof,” on the other hand, has an almost gospel-like swing that stands in contrast to the quieter songs. The ethereal title track is the missing link between Big Star 3rd and the 21st century; if Alex Chilton were today a beautiful young woman, he’d sound like this.

Regresa FM Cornog (East River Pipe)

Regresa FM Cornog (East River Pipe)

EAST RIVER PIPE asks "What Are You On?"

EAST RIVER PIPE returns with another brilliant jewel of homemade chamber pop!

This sixth release (and first new East River Pipe record since 2003's Garbageheads On Endless Stun) is another magical, intimate album, one that continues to justify Rolling Stone's claim that F.M. Cornog is "one of our generation's great eccentric songwriters." Fans of SMOG, Mercury Rev, and My Morning Jacket should take notice of Cornog's mastery.

East River Pipe (a.k.a F.M. Cornog) has long documented the shadowy world of the downtrodden and forgotten amongst us, the people you pass on the street but choose not to notice. Their struggles and their triumphs have always been his inspiration, and his music both celebrates and mourns the down-and-out loser in all of us. It's real life and it's not always pretty, but in the hands of East River Pipe these stories are always moving.

What Are You On? gravitates towards the role that drugs play in the lives of a variety of characters and situations. It's a real life look at drugs/alcohol and how they infiltrate our lives in real ways - both positive and negative.
There's humor and there's epic sadness. Triumph and tragedy. Definitely not your typical hedonistic romp through the rock n roll lifestyle, or the glamourous life of cocaine snorting super models, but instead a collection honest, stark and beautiful portraits of people struggling just to get by, or just to get high, as best they can.

An incredibly sublime and powerful album, What Are You On? once again demonstrates the unique and formidable talent that is East River Pipe.

El regreso de los TV Personalities

El regreso de los TV Personalities

¡Vaya título el del single!

Domino is honoured to be releasing an album by the legendary group The Television Personalities, their first in 11 years. Daniel Treacy is one of the most distinctive and brilliant voices in British pop, unheard by far too many for far too long.

Ask anyone, anyone with even just a slightest interest in pop music and they will all have a different take on The Television Personalities… Someone will mention that they were Kurt Cobain’s favourite band. Someone else will go on about how they were the inspiration behind Creation Records and Alan McGee’s biggest heroes. And a third person will call them the Original Babyshambles, from across the room someone will ask if they really did support Pink Floyd on the back of their 'I Know Where Syd Barrett Lives' single. And didn’t they have the cheek to call an album They Could Have Been Bigger Than The Beatles?

‘My Dark Places’ is released by Domino on the 27th February and is preceded by the single ‘All The Young Children On Smack, All The Young Children On Crack’ released on the 6th February on 7”

Nick Garrie - Can I Stay with You

Nick Garrie - Can I Stay with You

One of the most mysterious and sought after albums ever... A masterpiece of dark and enigmatic downer orchestral folk-rock beauty redolent of Nick Drake or even, er, Peter Sarstedt if you please! But who on earth was Nick Garrie-Hamilton? And why was this a France-only album?

Rev-Ola is in a position to answer all this. The amazing adventures of the Russian/Scottish Euroboy, wandering the hip hotspots of Europe, San Tropez to Amsterdam, from his parental homebase in Paris writing songs with the likes of Francis Lai, having megahits in Spain, recording with Cat Stevens and his band, touring and hanging out with Leonard Cohen, it just goes on, and yes, it is impossibly romantic - but the meat of this all is the amazing "Nightmare Of J.B. Stanislas" itself.

A languid, orchestral post-psychedelic treat, it’s equal parts UK baroque-downer pop/folk, with echoes of Peter Sarstedt and Al Stewart, and Euro grown up yet now-sounding pop, where Dutronc meets Aznavour...and Gainsbourg is the Daddy.

Never before on CD (possibly because no one could actually find a mint copy to bootleg!), in this wonderful post-modern age where ’quiet is the new loud’, Nick Garrie-Hamilton’s lone 1969 album returns like a long lost uncle clutching armfuls of oranges and lemons. Which should please lovers of lite popsyke and symphonic pop no end. Its closest musical relatives are probably Twice As Much, Piccadilly Line or Duncan Browne’s Immediate recordings, so it ought to appeal especially to those of a Fading Yellow persuasion a growing tribe and that’s not all...oh no!

We have added NOT ONLY Nick’s rare-issimo 1968 psych pop single Queen Of Spades/Close Your Eyes BUT ALSO tracks from his earliest recording, done for a label which planned to take over the European music business by issuing music only on 8-Track Cartridges - unheard even by Nick for years due to the 8-Track player not recovering from being dead! So, this new version of "Stanislas" is INTENSIFIED beyond belief and will be the DEFINITIVE version!

Este año se titulará "Nice Price" y lo enviarán a partir de Enero por problemas técnicos ("the test pressings of Nice Price came back with a beautiful hole in the middle of Who Do You Think You are...")

"if you liked Gather In The Mushrooms you will also cherish Early Morning Hush, out in the New Year on Sanctuary", dice.

Saint Etienne visitan a Mark Radcliffe

Saint Etienne visitan a Mark Radcliffe

Preciosa.

Saint Etienne appeared live in the studio on Mark Radcliffe's BBC Radio 2 show and performed three songs; a samba stylee version of their current single 'Good Thing', the previous single from 'Tales From Turnpike House', 'Side Streets' and a current B-side and Womack & Womack cover 'Missing Persons Bureau'

This year marked the 25th anniversary of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis hanging himself, and his former bandmates in New Order have been paying tribute to him by including a few Joy Division songs in their sets this year.

Now the iconic U.K. group are going one step further and are working on new material for a Curtis biopic. Director and noted rock photographer Anton Corbijn is the mastermind behind Control, a film based on a book by Curtis' widow, Deborah. The film has been planned for several years, but it wasn't until recently that the late singer's family approved a proposal. Casting for the movie is set to start in the spring.

"We were asked to do the soundtrack to the film, which I thought was a fucking great idea, for Joy Division to do the music for a Joy Division film because we've never really done a soundtrack before," bassist Peter Hook told NME.com. "The soundtrack could include new stuff.

"Basically Anton wants to use certain songs by Joy Division so that each song becomes a video. Like the way the 'Atmosphere' video was filmed, he wants to write videos that appear in the film.

"Every time we get accolades for Joy Division, it makes [Ian's suicide] sadder, especially with the film. Working on the film has made the whole thing seem more poignant."

New Order played a set almost entirely comprised of Joy Division songs in October as a tribute to John Peel, the legendary BBC Radio 1 DJ who died last year. There could be more of those shows in the future, too.

"We have actually talked about doing Joy Division sets and gigs, but we haven't actually found our footing yet," said Hook. "If we deem it to be enjoyable, then we'll do it."
