Plastic Operator: los nuevos The Postal Service

20070509095159-m-608c9ad8f18f04fd9441af9ea06b0428.jpgNot since the postal service have we heard an album that joins together electro and pop so perfectly. it's a summer album and we don't say that lightly. mathieu gendreau (electronics) and pieter van dessel (vocals / electronics) are plastic operator. respectively hailing from montreal and antwerp, the pair met at london's westminster university in 2001 where they were both studying audio production. bonding over a shared love of two decades of fine electronic pop music (influences include jean-michel jarre, akufen, the pet shop boys, vangelis, boards of canada, the postal service...) the pair began to make this

The Ladybug Transistor - Can't Wait Another Day

20070511104400-1151013633-0.jpg

Verdaderamente es un gran lp. Lástima lo del batería.

The Ladybug Transistor are releasing their 5th full length studio, titled “Can’t Wait Another Day” on June 5th via Merge Records. “The album features spirited contributions from members of Aislers Set, Architecture in Helsinki, The Clientele, Jens Lekman, Kevin Barker (Currituck Co., Vetiver), Heather McIntosh (Circulatory System, Instruments) Roy Nathanson (Lounge Lizards/Jazz Passengers) and others. The first fruits of these sessions were heard on 2006’s Here Comes The Rain EP. Sad to say that San Fadyl, long time drummer for the Ladybug Transistor, passed away on April 25th, 2007. His death was caused by a long time battle with asthma. More information about San from the Ladybug Transistor can be read here.

Cositas sobre Lucky Soul

20070511113637-111583148-32dca6580b-m.jpg

Elefant ya ha colgado en su web los clips de “Lips Are Unhappy” y “Add your Light to Mine Baby”, por lo que ya te los puedes descargar. Y aquí hay un pequeño extracto de una entrevista al grupo en londonist.com

Who are your influences?
Most Motown (pre Boys2Men), Dusty Springfield/ Walker Brothers, Otis/Stax, Sandie Shaw, anything that Phil Spector did (apart from shooting), Big Bad Burt Bacarach, Gram Parsons, The Kinks, The Smiths and The Stones, Madonna (pre embarrassing mum period) and The Flaming Lips.

Recommend one album to our readers you don't think they will have discovered:

From Dusty with Love by Dusty Springfield. It always gets overshadowed by Dusty in Memphis but there's still some outstanding singing on there.

From Dusty with Love

20070511193153-s540413.jpgDecía Andrew de Lucky Soul en el post anterior que "Dusty with Love" de Dusty Springfield “always gets overshadowed by Dusty in Memphis but there's still some outstanding singing on there.” Y verdaderamente es un discazo y me gusta más que el laureado por la crítica "Dusty In Memphis" (siempre sale en la listas de los mejores discos del rock). Gracias Andrew.

RIP: Keith de Blueboy

20070523023114-649307752-m.jpg

De tangents.com

I just had a really sad email from Richard, posted below. Dunno about you, but I am off to play 'Popkiss' because as I once wrote in a book, it sounds exactly as it ought. Pop never got more perfect than that, and that's the way I think I'd like to remember Keith.

Dear Friends

It is with immense sadness that I write to inform you that my dearest friend Keith Girdler died on May 15th 2007. Keith passed away peacefully after a recent deterioration in his condition - he was diagnosed with cancer in July 2004. Keith was a truly special person and I know that many people will hold very fond memories of their time spent in his company. Keith is survived by his partner, his siblings and their families. We are all devastated at the tragic loss of Keith and we will miss him enormously. Keith was known to many as the singer in Blueboy - a brilliant band who are still seen as influential many years since they last released a record. He was a gifted songwriter and he had a beautiful voice. I considered Keith to be not only my best friend but an amazingly talented person. It was a huge privilege to know him.  Despite continuing to release records with his other groups Arabesque,  Beaumont, Lovejoy and The Snowdrops, Keith's focus shifted away from music in recent years. He enjoyed a successful career, first by training as a qualified social worker and then developing a skilled role as Volunteer Services Manager for Age Concern Eastbourne. He was passionate about his work and the need to stand up for some of the most vulnerable elderly people in our society. Keith was exteremly brave and he continued in his work for as long as possible during his illness. I know that Keith was very highly regarded by his colleagues and the people for whom he provided care and support in his work. He was a selfless and gentle person who genuinely affected everyone he knew with his warmth, kindness, humility and humour. Keith wanted to be remembered, to use his own words, with 'happiness and smiles' - which for those of us fortunate enough to have known him, will come all too easily despite our grief. Words cannot really come close to describing the feelings we have about Keith. However, I know that many people will want to express their sorrow at this news and their sympathy to his family and friends. If you would like to send a message of condolence, or share your memories of Keith, please send an email to: snowboundipc@yahoo.co.uk
Messages and tributes to Keith will be published online in the near future, when a suitable web location has been established. Richard Preece

Friday Bridge: Manners and Mannerisms

20070525041828-m-72cf72c795dd225568b58503d44c6962.jpg

Friday Bridge is Ylva Lindberg from Stockholm, Sweden. Friday Bridge creates pretty sounds for having tea and biscuits to on a Sunday evening. She makes them using flutes, tambourines, bells, synthesizers and bird tweets. Sometimes Friday Bridge wishes she was Claudine Longet or maybe Sylvie Vartan. Sometimes she wishes for rain.

LIE084 The Lady Julie (Best Kept Secret, 2004)
VOL006 It Girl (Volupté, split singel w/ Le Sport, 2005)
BED025 Friday Bridge 2 (Bedroom, 2005)
"Intricacy" full-length album on But is it Art?, spring 2007

People seem to like Love and Nostalgia, the new Friday Bridge track... thank you for your support! Alistair Fitchett calls it fabulous, pure pop on Tangents, Coast is Clear calls it a wonderful song — POP mit einem großen P, Swedesplease says it's a cause for celebration and Sonic Magazine says it surpasses our every expectation. Extract from James, Henry, Jr. ‘Alfred de Musset’ The Galaxy, vol. 23, issue 6 (June 1877): “It was proposed to him to accept a place as attaché to the French embassy at Madrid, a comfortable salary being affixed to the post. But Musset found no inspiration in the prospect. He had written about Spain in his earlier years—he had sung in the most charming fashion about Juanas and Pepitas, about señoras in mantillas stealing down palace staircases that look ‘blue’ in the starlight. But the desire to see the picturesqueness that he had fancied proved itself to have none of the force of a motive.”

This Year´s Model: ¡menuda sorpresa!

20070526103446-band1.jpgThis Year's Model is the solo project that never came to be. It started when I -Niklas Gustaffson (The Higher Elevations)- was offered a solo deal with legendary independent label Marsh Marigold. I quickly recorded and released an EP late 2005. But at the time of recording my solo plans had been shelved and replaced by a full band. I have surrounded myself with the best of people I know: long time friend and musical partner Henric Strömberg (Tomas Denver Jonsson and The September Surprise), the best and most talented girl in the world Ylva Lindberg (Friday Bridge), and the man that used to be in the Morons, the highly accomplished Mattias Svensson.

Now, This Year's Model present you with our first album, The Clock Strikes Ten. A quite crime novel-esque, don't you think. So we invited three of our sources of inspiration to write something in that vein to the booklet; Dickon Edwards, Vic Godard and Jessica Griffin. Amazingly, they all agreed. So, the booklet to this album (beautifully packaged in a digipak sleeve with a 20-page booklet by clever design agency Une Esthétique Nouvelle) is really a terrific cultural artefact in its own right.

But musically then, is it any good? Well, This Year's Model are smugly pleased with this record, anyway. Bid from Scarlet's Well is on it—reciting, singing and playing wonderful guitars on O, Heaven Help My Foolish Heart. And Louise from Don't be a Stranger, sharing writing credits and playing lead guitar on Picture This Ended. The fifteen tracks span from jangly guitars to sweet pianos; via one or two slightly weird harpsichords. We think it's splendid. Hope you will like it too.
